Chapter 313
Chapter 313 Goodbye ASHER It had been a while since Cassandra entered the building, and with every passing minute, my nervousness and anxiety grew stronger. While I knew she was capable of handling herself, I didn’t like the idea of her being in the House of Moses without me.
I began to feel restless. It was a mistake to let her leave with Adalyn alone.
I pondered my options for a minute and then decided I couldn’t wait out on the grounds any longer, not when my mate could be in danger. I started to walk toward the building, but before I could get too far, the soldiers guarding us stopped me.
At first, they were polite but quickly, they became rude. They shouted and told me to back up. I wasn’t allowed in; not until Lady Adalyn said so.
I considered pushing past them but didn’t want to escalate the situation, so I nodded and retreated ever so slightly.
All around me, the councilors grew restless. They too, wanted to leave, only they desired to go back to Merliscire. However, when a group of them tried to turn around and go back in the direction we came from the soldiers stepped in and wouldn't allow them to leave.
The councilors and soldiers argued and that soon escalated to physical blows.
Shoving commenced and then angry cries. The soldiers were armed but no one wanted to accept defeat, myself included.
“Ineed to get inside,” I declared again.
The leading soldier showed his gun and bared his teeth at me. “No one can enter without Lord or Lady Moses’ command. Step aside.” Karsh was indignant upon hearing his words. His face reddened and his eyes flashed.
“How dare you go against the king?” he demanded. “Is your lord planning an usurpation?” The leading soldier’s lips drew into a thin line and he rolled his dark eyes. “I serve the Lords of Moses alone and report to them directly. If the king wants something, he needs to speak directly to Lord or Lady Moses.” “You're nothing more than a dog of
Moses,” Karsh murmured. “A pathetic, disloyal mutt.” The soldier was vexed at once. He place his gun against Karsh’s forehead with no hesitation and the soldiers behind him raised their guns as well. Despite the threat, Karsh snarled and bared his fangs to the soldier. Some of the other, younger councilors snarled with him, and as their growls filled the air, it seemed like a fight was about to break out, one that would end in bloodshed.
Suddenly, noise broke out all around us. It sounded like footsteps, the steps of a lot of people. Perhaps a troop.
The soldiers seemed surprised and agitated by this influx of noise. They gripped their weapons in their hands and glanced around before fixing their
gazes on the front gate. None of them seemed to know whose reinforcement it was.
Suddenly, the gate burst open, and hundreds of soldiers flooded in, following a man and a woman. I couldn’t tell who they were at first, but moments later, my vision cleared and a smile formed on my lips.
It was Kane and Kiara.
The soldiers stepped back enough for me to move past them and I strode right over to my stepbrother.
“Sorry I'm late, dear brother,” Kane said when I approached. His violet eyes were tired but glinted with their usual amusement. “I was delayed a little but I have the soldiers of Sky Pride along with the Myriad behind me.”
I wanted to laugh. These new soldiers were much stronger than the Moses’ and with them on our side, we finally stood a chance.
“Glad to see you, Kane,” I said and then I nodded at Kiara. “And you Kiara.
I need to get inside the building.
Cassandra is in there with Adalyn.” Kane blinked at me. “Why is she in there?” “Adalyn took Marco hostage,” I explained vaguely. “Those were her terms.” My stepbrother shook his head. “She’s insane.” I nodded in agreement. “We need to get in there.” Just as I uttered the words, Kane’s soldiers caught up and the courtyard
descended into chaos. It became a massive battle and despite the huge gap in their strength, the Moses soldiers decided to fight.
“We'll get you there,” Kane announced, and he took Kiara’s hand.
“Let’s go!” We moved forward and a handful of Sky Pride’s soldiers rushed over to us.
With their help, I was able to move through the yard and then made it to the doors of the House of Moses.
“Good luck, brother!” Kane called out and then he rejoined the madness with Kiara.
I wanted to tell him the same but there was no time. I rushed into the House of Moses and began to search for Cassandra.
I ran quickly through the corridors but couldn’t find anyone other than some scared servants. They seemed to have no idea what was going on and were rightfully fearful of all of the noise. I wanted to comfort them but there was no time.
I continued to search the halls until suddenly, I bumped into someone else. Nôvel(D)rama.Org's content.
It was Adalyn.
Her golden eyes were crazed and I realized that she didn’t seem to recognize me at all. She muttered over and over to herself and then stumbled before running toward the door.
Suddenly, a group ran toward me, headed by Cassandra, and relief ran through me.
“Are you alright?” I demanded as she reached me.
1 “Tam,” she assured me. She held Marco tightly in her arms. “Adalyn has a knife that’s soaked with poison. We need to get to her.” My eyes widened and I nodded.
There was no telling what someone in her state of mind would do with such a weapon.
We ran down the corridor and caught up with Adalyn on the porch. She stared out at the fighting soldiers fora second and then whipped around to face us.
I stood in front of Cassandra to protect her and Adalyn laughed.
“you're a fool, Asher,” she managed to say through her laughter. “Thal healer
is a witch. She should have been burnt in the inferno.” A few Myriad soldiers approached the porch and I held my hands up to get them to stop.
“She has a poisoned knife,” I called out to them, causing Adalyn to laugh again.
“No one can stop me!” she cackled as she waved the blade around. She suddenly stopped and stared at Marco, who was tightly clenched against Cassandra.
Adalyn stepped forward. “Come to Mommy, Marco.” Marco shook his head. “No, Mommy.” She glared at Cassandra venomously.
“Now you've taken my son from me
too!” “Stop it Adalyn!” I shouted at her.
“This is your final chanceto surrender.” Adalyn stopped in her tracks and turned to face me. Her expression grew solemn and she shook her head.
“There is no last chance for me,” she said.
“Ada, please,” Cassandra pleaded, and my lips parted in surprise. It had been a long time since I'd heard her use Adalyn’s nickname and it was a little jarring. Did she know that Cassandra was really Cora? For a moment, Adalyn seemed like she was going to drop the knife but then she shook her head and placed the knife against her own throat. My heart
dropped as she smiled.
“Goodbye Asher,” she whispered, and { then she smiled at Cassandra.
“Goodbye Cora.” Then, before I could stop her, she slit her throat.
