CHAPTER CXV
~~~
ONE TORTUROUS MONTH.
That was what the past month had been like to Sophia. It had been a month since she last saw Chase after she fell unconscious on his birthday, and she hadn’t set her eyes on him again. No one had.
Sometimes, she used to have flashbacks where she normally saw Chase kneeling down in front of her bed and saying non-hurtful things to her.
The flashbacks weren’t clear, so she dismissed it as a dream that she might have had that night, which was still bugging her mind. She totally dismissed the thought when her doctor told her that thinking too much may cause stress for the baby.
Their baby. Sophia looked down at her flat tummy, and a smile spread across her lips. The baby in her was literally the only source of her happiness ever since Chase left. Nothing made her happy apart from her baby. Not even Lucas, Luciano or Valerie’s attempts to make her happy moved her.
“Soph,”
Sophia looked up and found Valerie standing before her holding a tray, which contained two glasses on it. She dropped her legs from the table and closed the book she had picked up from Chase’s shelf, then adjusted on her seat. “Hey, Val,” She passed her a tight-lipped smile.
“Is it okay if I sit here?” Valerie motioned to the empty chair opposite Sophia. “The air here in the garden is so refreshing,”
“Sure,” Sophia dropped the book on the table, making a mental note to continue reading from where she stopped after her conversation with Valerie. “It’s no problem,”
Valerie dropped the tray on the table and took a seat, staring around the garden. “You seem to be enjoying staying in the garden nowadays,” She looked at Sophia.
“Yeah,” Sophia said. “Plus, I need to make my mind off things by reading Chase’s books even though it still doesn’t completely help,”
“Ohhh,” Valerie said, clearing her throat to change the topic as she heard the sadness in Sophia’s voice. “I got you lemonade juice. Made some research about it and learnt it’s good for you and the baby,”
Sophia looked at the two glasses of lemonade juice before looking up at Valerie. “Thanks. I’ll definitely have it,” Sophia stretched her hand to take a glass.
When Sophia took a sip from the drink, Valerie asked. “Rather than hurting yourself more by reading Don’s books, don’t you think it would be better if you continued your online classes?”
Sophia gave Valerie a pained smile, shaking her head. “I don’t find the zeal in it any longer,” Tears filled her eyes all of a sudden. “I’ve tried, Val. I’ve tried to continue those online classes, but it reminds me of Chase all the time. I literally feel him all around me any time I study or try to do anything meaningful. It’s as if I’ve gotten addicted to him and his presence being around me and can’t take him off my mind,” A tear cascaded down her cheeks and she quickly wiped it with the back of her palms, swallowing the huge lump at the back of her throat. “I- It hurts, Val. Loving Chase hurts, but I can’t get away from him. I know that harbouring these feelings would keep on hurting me, but I want to get hurt. I don’t ever want to stop loving him,”
Another month passed by in a blur. Chase never showed up. Sophia had begun to think that something bad must have happened to him. Normally, when he ignored her, it was never for more than a month.
Sophia walked around the living room, worry etched all over her features. She was scared. Her heart was drumming wildly against her chest.
She let out a sigh and ran her hands through her messy hair. She slumped on the couch and closed her eyes, resting her head on the couch.
“Are you okay, Soph?”
She opened her eyes and found Valerie standing before her with a worried look on her face, too.Exclusive © material by Nô(/v)elDrama.Org.
She blurted out. “I’m not,” She sighed. “I’m scared. I’m scared something bad will happen to Chase or has already happened. He- he never ignores me for more than a month, and this whole thing is taking a toll on me. I understand he doesn’t want this baby, but the least he can do is be there for us. I- I-,”
She was cut off by Valerie sitting down beside her and placing her warm hands over her cold ones. “Breathe,”
“I can’t,” She breathed out. “I’m scared. What if -”
Valerie cut her off again. “Don is okay. He’s perfectly okay,”
Sophia turned to look at Valerie. “How do you know he’s fine? Did you speak to him? Did you see him? Did Lucas or Lu -”
“No one knows where he is, but we’re all sure he’s okay. We were worried about him as well, but we came to the realization that he’ll be fine,”
“Don’t say things like that, Val,” Sophia sighed. “You can’t be so sure,”
“I’m sure he’s okay,” Valerie smiled at her. “He’s the Don. Nothing bad can happen to him,”
“What if -”
“I told you he’s fine,” Valerie cut her off again. “He’s used to leaving the compound like this. It’s pretty normal. I think the only thing you should do is exercise a little patience. You can’t stress yourself out this way. It won’t do any good to your baby,”
Sophia sighed, nodding helplessly.
