Chapter 61
Chapter 61
Cordelia was the talk of the town, the reigning queen of academics at Greenmeadow High. After she clinched the top spot in her grade and snagged the national championship at the Galaxy Math Whiz Competition, she became a celebrity in the corridors of her school
But fame had not changed her. She was a modest soul, her life a routine of school and study, simplicity personified
That was until social media caught wind of her friendship with Keen. A post of them together went viral in the math community, sending her popularity through the roof
It wasn’t long before sneaky snapshots of her started appearing on message boards and forums.
Today, Cordelia happened to walk out of Midnight Scent, just as a classmate was snapping her picture. Everard, ever the opportunist, used the moment to clear his name.
The rumor mill, fueled by Juliana’s chattering, had it that Cordelia was messing with a toy boy. The intimate picture of her and Everard seemed to confirm that the owner of Midnight Scent was the infamous sugar baby.
Unaware of the online frenzy, Cordelia plodded to school, baseball cap pulled down, a loose–fitting varsity jacket hiding her frame, the weight of her backpack a familiar comfort. Approaching the school gates, she noticed a crowd gathered, but before she could decide to steer clear, a familiar voice cut through the murmurs, “Yates”
Hers
steps faltered before she moved towards the commotion
The crowd parted to reveal a fiery–haired Yates, his crimson locks standing defiant, the embodiment of an alternative punk style. His handsome and icy face was set in a look of cool rebellion.
Not far from him stood a petite girl in a Greenmeadow High School’s uniform. It was Yuna, her eyes red from crying, desperation in her voice. “Was it you? Did you get my parents fired?”
Yates, engrossed in his phone and multitasking with social media, was attempting to rig a math competition poll in Cordelia’s favor,
His patience already thin, he snapped at Yuna’s accusation, “Yeah, so what?”
“It’s you! Yates, how can you do this? What are you doing to me? Why do you quit my parents‘ job?!” Yuna cried and shouted, “Are you bullying ordinary people with the strength of the Griffin family?”
Yates put down his mobile phone. As a person too lazy to explain, he could not leave such a handle. His star eyes swept straight to Yuna in wait for a while, and his tone was cold and ice, “In my company, is there any problem for me to quit two employees who made great mistakes in their work?
Yuna was anxious and retorted, “Don’t make excuses, you are trying to avenge Cordelia! I’ve heard about it for a long time, and you recognized her as the boss! I’m really curious what Cordelia gave you that can make you stand up for her! Did she sleep with you?”
At the mention of her words, Yates spiked his fury.
One menacing step forward, his voice was a dangerous growl, “What the fuck are you blabbering about?”
Yuna recoiled, fear replacing her bravado. She came from a humble home, her parents‘ sudden job loss was a devastating blow. They were crumbling under the pressure, taking it out on Yuna.
Out of desperation and anger, she accused Cordelia, “What’s the matter? Can’t you handle the truth?”
“Shit!” Ya
Yates drank low. “If you talk bullshit again, I will give you the dead wish!”
Yuna shouted, “Cordelia is a bitch! Don’t you submit to her because she’s good–looking..
Yates stopped talking, rolled up his school uniform and stepped forward, just about to fight!
Yuna’s long school uniform sleeve flashed with light. She took out a fruit knife and rushed to Yates, “If you don’t

give me a pant, then everyone won’t survive!”
A cold light flashed in Yates‘ eyes.
Yates, about to lunge at her, was stopped short as a slender figure darted in.
Cordelia with a cap grabbed his arm and immediately pulled Yates to flash aside. Then, she retreated with her right foot and stretched out her fists. Then Yuna fell to the ground. Cordelia grabbed Yuna’s hands and twisted them behind her, and her face stuck to the ground and could not move.
Cordelia gently controlled Yuna with one hand, looked up at Yates and asked slowly, “Are you all right?”
Yates was taken aback, his heart unexpectedly racing. No one had ever stepped in front of him to offer protection.
“What do we do with her?” he asked after a moment.
“Call the police,” Cordelia said. This was more than a schoolyard scuffle. Yuna had come with a knife.
As they waited for the police, Yates couldn’t help but glance at Cordelia. At the thought of Yuna’s words, her cleared his throat, “Don’t listen to her nonsense.”
Cordelia blinked and asked, “What nonsense?”
Yates was caught off guard, but he quickly brushed it off. “Never mind.“” NôvelDrama.Org holds text © rights.
He had never viewed her in that light…
She had bested him in front of his gang once, earning his grudging respect. His subsequent help was not a sign of submission, but a defense of their mutual honor.
But that didn’t mean he was subservient. One day, he vowed to challenge Cordelia again and reclaim his throne. Maybe he could convince Cordelia to dye her hair red too.
As Yates tried to compose himself, his phone buzzed with a message from Flame No. 1, “Dude, Boss Cordelia ‘s taken for reall
Yates was confused.
He clicked on the link, and there was a photo. The guy was turned away from the camera, but clearly a looker. Classic pretty boy.
His jaw clenched.
Cordelia was so naive but this guy had to be a gold–digger and a heartbreaker. Yates couldn’t just stand by and watch this happen!
After the cops had taken Yuna away, Cordelia returned to class.
Yates glanced at the clock. The National Math League results wouldn’t be out until ten. There was still time!
With that thought, he made a beeline for Midnight Scent
He pushed the door open. Spotting that pretty boy behind the counter, Yates slid a card across, “There’s a million bucks on this. Take it and leave her alone.”
Everard, the so–called toy boy, was at a loss for words.
