Chapter 252

Chapter 252

When Hanley burst into the room, Candice stood frozen, and her face was unnaturally pale. She

maintained the posture of making a call, but her phone lay on the floor.

“Joe Sundance’s family, please come to Silverstone Hospital as soon as possible to handle matters

regarding the patient’s body-” the speakers said, their words echoing off the glowing phone screen.

Upon hearing this, Hanley’s eyes shifted to Candice.

On the other hand, Candice’s expression remained expressionless and blank.

Sensing his gaze, she looked at the fallen phone. Then, she slowly crouched down, picked it up, and

asked with a trembling voice, “Did you dial the wrong number? When I went to the hospital yesterday,

my grandfather was fine.”

“Is this Ms. Candice? The contact information you left at Silverstone Hospital is this—”

As the voice on the phone continued, Candice was still processing the situation. Clutching the

phone, she sat on the floor, eyes filled with confusion.

“Hello? Is this Ms. Candice-”

The voice echoed again in the phone, and Candice gradually came to her senses. Hanley reached

out to pull her up, but she shook herself free, stood up, and walked out.

Her mind was blank with the voice from the phone repeating in her head.

Joe Sundance’s body?

Who was he?

He was… Grandpa, right?

But Grandpa was fine.

How could he suddenly… die?

As she stumbled down the stairs, she was so disoriented that she couldn’t make out any sounds

until someone grabbed her wrist.

Hanley yelled out, “Candice!”

Only then did she slightly snap back. She mumbled, “Is there something wrong? I need to go to the

hospital now. My grandfather is waiting for me. Can’t it wait until I come back? I’m sorry, truly

sorry.”

Her words were incoherent, repeating those two sentences.

Frowning deeply, Hanley seized her wrist. “You’re not even wearing shoes!”

Not only was she barefoot, but she was also dressed in home attire. Following his gaze, she

nodded awkwardly.

His expression was serious. “I’ll take you to the hospital.”

When they arrived at the hospital, Candice didn’t know how she got inside. Several times on the way,

she nearly stumbled, saved only by Hanley pulling her. Her grandfather’s ward was upstairs, and when

they reached it, people were still inside. Unexpectedly, Ivor and Yvonne were also there.

At that moment, she seemed to understand everything at once. She looked at Ivor, who was squatting

on the floor, and kicked him, shouting, “Was it you?!”

Ivor, who was initially feeling guilty, suddenly stood up and shouted loudly, “You idiot! My wife’s father

died, and I came to offer condolences. What’s wrong with that!”

“We don’t need you here! Get out!” Candice closed her eyes, unable to look at the old man lying in

the bed.

“Ms. Renault, it was him who unplugged the patient’s ventilator. He can’t leave!” The nurse’s voice

suddenly sounded, catching Candice off guard.

However, Ivor, as if suddenly kicked in the tail, started yelling again, “Where the hell did you see

that?! I just came to see my father–in–law!”

His clamor only made him seem more guilty. Candice’s terrifying thoughts became more

apparent, and she didn’t know where she found the strength. She grabbed Ivor’s collar and

dragged him out of the ward.

Inside the room, there was also Yvonne. Candice stared at her with a fierce gaze, and her voice

was ominous as she yelled, “You, get out too!”

Suddenly, Ivor spat at Candice. He had just been forcibly dragged out and felt that he had lost all his

dignity.

Since Yvonne was Candice’s biological mother, he didn’t believe Candice could really ignore her.

So, with that thought in his head, he straightened up and shouted loudly, “You wretched creature, what

are you pretending for?! That old man was so old that he already had one foot in the grave. Why spend

money to prolong his life?! I asked you for a penny, and you wouldn’t give it. Yet you shamelessly

pretend to be filial in front of me. I bet that old man was overjoyed to see me. He

probably wished he died sooner!”

“Do you think you’re being filial? You’re just forcing him to suffer. He should’ve been dead long ago. Be

careful; you might not even find a grave in the future. I’m also doing a good deed, showing respect to

the old man-

His words were cut short as a loud slap echoed.

Yet, it wasn’t Candice who had slapped him; it was Yvonne.

After Yvonne hit him, her whole body trembled. Her eyes were red and swollen, and tears kept

streaming down. Pointing at Ivor, she said, “Shut up! That’s my dad.”

“He’s your dad. Not mine! If he doesn’t die now, I’ll have to take care of him in the future!” Ivor

retorted.

“Are you even human to be this cruel?” Yvonne didn’t retreat even when Ivor started attacking. She

kept hitting and kicking him.

Chaos erupted outside.

Observing this messy scene, Candice’s hands began to tremble involuntarily. With her back to the

ward door, she still didn’t have the courage to enter.

It felt unreal to her.

As long as she didn’t push that door open, Joe would be fine.

Yesterday, before leaving, he had told her that he wanted to drink Madam Zora’s fish soup.

She even showed him the renovated house in the northern part of the city.

Candice tightly grasped the doorknob but lacked the courage to push it open. It was almost as if behind

the door lay an abyss, ready to devour her as soon as she opened it.

But she dared not. The hospital wouldn’t give her time.

When the nurse came to inform her about moving the bed, Candice’s face turned as white as

paper.

Beside her was Hanley, squeezing her arm. “Go and say goodbye properly.”

The thread in her heart snapped all at once. Tears instantly welled up in her eyes, but she immediately

wiped them away.

Yes. She had to say goodbye to her grandfather.

She couldn’t cry.

Joe didn’t like it when she cried.

Candice haphazardly wiped her face and struggled to open the door.

She tried to appear as cheerful as possible, but when she saw the old man lying on the bed, her smile

immediately dropped.

She used all her strength to keep her lips tightly sealed. However, the tears in her eyes refused to stop,

streaming down continuously.

She gently and cautiously held her grandfather’s hand as it still retained the lingering warmth.

Unable to hold back any longer, Candice placed her grandfather’s hand on her own head, just like

when he used to pat her head when she was little.

Her voice was unclear, only conveying a sense of grievance, “Grandpa, even you don’t want me

anymore, huh?”
