What Separates Me and You

Chapter 64

Chapter 64

Chapter 64 Lewis, Do You Love Me?

“Miss, are you alright?”

Suddenly, someone helped Josephine up. She looked up to see a young man roughly in his college years. He was in a white down jacket with headphones around his neck and a backpack on his shoulders.

Josephine wiped away her tears and nodded.

“That’s good to hear. Go home then.” The young man smiled at her and left.

Josephine kept standing there, feeling the cold wind on her. It was a kind of iciness she had never felt before.

She sat on the steps, took her phone out, and looked at Avery’s message.

“What happened?”

Josephine stared at that message, not knowing how to reply. She sat there in a daze for almost two hours when she suddenly stood up and took a cab to the landfill where Mrs. Jinkins used to live.

When she reached her tiny hut, no one was there. Mrs. Jinkins’ belongings were taken away too the last time, leaving only the bed..

Josephine walked over and sat on the bed, gently caressing the dirty bedsheet.

Elysium was such a huge city. Where was she going to find Patrick and Mrs. Jinkins?

She took her phone out and aimlessly scrolled through her contacts when she noticed Mrs. Jinkins’ contact. She had almost forgotten that she had bought Mrs. Jinkins a phone.

Josephine immediately dialed Mrs. Jinkins. The tone rang for a long time, but no one picked up. She tried over and over again until an automated voice notified her that the phone had

been shut off.

She lowered her hands, sitting in a daze in the tiny hut, constantly worried about what would happen to Mrs. Jinkins. Mrs. Jinkins was not even picking up her phone.

It was not that Mrs. Jinkins did not want to pick up Josephine’s call. She had thrown her phone.

into the river.

Patrick wanted to take her phone from her, so in desperation, she flung her phone out of the

car window into the river.

Patrick angrily slammed on the brakes. He jumped out of the car and ran over to the railing. The current was strong. No one could find Mrs. Jinkins’ phone.

Patrick returned to the car, pointed at Mrs. Jinkins, and yelled, “You old hag! Don’t think that

just because you threw your phone away, I won’t be able to get my money! I know where the mute lives! I’ll just go and find her!”

Mrs. Jinkins trembled with fury. “If you dare go looking for her, I’ll kill myself right in front of you!”

“What has that mute bitch given you that you would protect her so much? Don’t you care about your grandson?”

“Look at how old I am. I can barely care for myself. Who else should I care for?” Mrs. Jinkins smiled bitterly. “I have one foot in the grave, and all you can think of is using me to get my employer’s money. Patrick, you’ll get what’s coming for you sooner or later.”

Patrick chuckled rudely. “Even if I get what’s coming for me, you won’t be alive to see it. Just wait. That mute lady cares for you a lot. She will surely find a way to get me the money. Thank God you’re still useful after being the Alvarez family’s bitch all these years.”

Patrick had spent Mrs. Jinkins’ hard-earned money from working as a maid for the Alvarez family for all those years, yet he despised his mother for being a maid and often said that she had no social standing.

Mrs. Jinkins shut her eyes and clenched her fists so hard that the veins on the back of her hands popped. She no longer had anything else to say to Patrick.

Josephine sat in the tiny hut until the sky was dark. Then, she got up and headed back to the

mansion.

She stood in front of the huge black door, looking at how vast and empty the inside was. She suddenly had no courage to enter anymore. Many questions were on her mind. Why did Patrick know how to look for Mrs. Jinkins here? He had not cared for his mother for so many years, yet he knew that she was in the mansion. Content from NôvelDr(a)ma.Org.

At the thought of a few possibilities, Josephine’s fingers trembled a little. As if to prove her right, a car arrived from behind her. The headlights shone on her, projecting her long shadow

inside the house.

Josephine slowly turned around to see Lewis get out of the car. The headlights were so

blinding she could barely open her eyes.

Lewis stood in front of her, and their eyes met. Josephine looked at his expressionless face in a

daze.

“What are you standing here for?” he asked.

Josephine pouted and signed. “Was it you?”

Lewis looked at her silently without responding. Josephine took it as a tacit agreement. He knew clearly what she was asking him about.

Josephine looked at Lewis in so much disbelief that her fingers tensed up. With huge difficulty, she signed. “Why? Did you not promise me?”

Lewis grabbed her hands to stop her from signing. “Let’s go in.”

Josephine broke free of his grasp and stubbornly asked once more, “Why? Why are you doing this to me?”

Lewis’s gaze darkened. His tone turned icy too. “We’ll talk once we’re inside!” His icy gaze was so sharp that it cut Josephine, making her step back.

“Why? What did I do wrong? Tell me, what did I do wrong?” Josephine signed.

Lewis grabbed her hands once more and pulled her inside. Josephine struggled with all her might. She clung to the frame of the door, unwilling to enter. She even bit Lewis on his wrist.

Lewis stopped in his tracks and let go of Josephine. Instead, he grabbed her by the chin. His eyes were filled with rage.

“This is the second time.” He clutched her chin tightly. The bite mark on his wrist was still wet with her spit. Under the light, the wound looked terrifying. “This is the second time you’ve bit me for an outsider, Josephine! You ask me why? Why do you think that is? Hmm?”

Josephine’s chin hurt from his grip. Tears fell down her face, flowing onto the back of his hand. She looked at him. The rage in his eyes felt like they could swallow her whole.

He was the one who hurt people, yet he was angry at her as if she was the one who committed. a felony.

Josephine signed with difficulty. “You were the one who hurt them first! I have already cut ties with Avery. Why did you still take Mrs. Jinkins away? Why did you go back on your word?”

Josephine could not understand why Lewis would do that. Lewis could not answer her questions. They stood off in silence.

After a while, Lewis said, “She has only gone to a place where she should be. Josephine, I’m your family. You have me. That should be enough. You don’t need anyone else. Do your understand?”

Josephine was stunned and looked at Lewis in disbelief. She had never felt so distant from him.

before.

Previously, when he said that, she thought he was just saying that out of anger. She thought. that he was truly worried that she would be badly influenced.

What about then? Why was Mrs. Jinkins a bad influence? How could he have issues with an old

woman?

His control over her was so extreme that it was grotesque. What was he planning on doing? Josephine could not understand why he would not let her go, even when he did not love her.

What kind of family was he?

Lewis looked at her for a while before letting go of her chin. He held her hand and led her inside once more.

Josephine was in a daze. She stood in the empty mansion foyer and turned to look at the sofa, only for her to realize that no one was there.

She tugged on Lewis’s sleeve and he turned around to look at her.

“Lewis, do you love me?” she signed.
